ESS first introduced the Read Classics Project in 2000, as a pilot project, at the initiative of sponsors especially concerned about the heritage of traditional Chinese culture. The project provides sets of textbooks on Chinese classics, including the Analects of Confucius, to interested schools. Students learn to read and recite classical Chinese literary texts, and in the process learn to appreciate the rhythm, harmony and richness of the Chinese language. Schools organize activities such as recital competititions to promote this activity.

The rural schools that participate in the project have found that learning and reciting Chinese classics have promoted understanding not only of Chinese culture, ethics and family values, but also have had a good influence on the children's behavior. The exercise has strengthened the children's power of concentration and their capacity to learn.

The project has become very popular among the rural schools, and have been implemented in over 200 schools. The following table presents some data on the project from 2010-2012.
